[House 47, you just got a most unpleasant wake-up call. Namely, loud banging and the whining of a terrified canine. Sigmund has just kicked Capell's door with all of his considerable strength and put his fist through the wall in the hallway.

Because it's not Capell's door anymore.

He's not going to wait to make the courtesy announcement, mostly because he's not sure how long he's going to keep it together. As it is, even over the journal his voice has a tight, brittle quality to it.]

If you knew him, Capell is... [He won't say 'home.' He's not. Home is with him. He won't.] ...gone.

[The depth of that grief is frightening. But she can't just walk off and pretend she didn't see it, much as there's a temptation to-- she's still a child, when all is said and done. So after a few moments, she unlatches herself from the wall, pausing long enough to give Dog a small scratch behind the ears. Cats and dogs can get along, just this once.

He may not notice her approach until she's by his side, fingertips touching nervously to his shoulder.]

[He glances up when she touches his shoulder, red-eyed in both senses, and gives her a look something like a smile that forgot to turn up at the corners. She's just a little girl, after all.]

Did I wake you? My apologies.

[She shakes her head, although of course he did. And she hopes he forgives the stupid question, but Katie is, for once, at a loss for what to say.]

Will you be all right?

[He pulls her down to give her a hug. A sort of limp, shaky hug, but a hug all the same. Because he can't fall all to pieces. Because she needs him. Possibly not to protect her, and not to provide for her. But somebody needs to make sure she washes her grubby little paws and eats things that aren't candy. Somebody has to make sure she has one dress without chalk all down the front of it. Somebody has to wait up at night for her, even though nothing will stop her from coming and going as she pleases.

Might as well be him.]

I will. [And for once in his life, he doesn't know whether or not he's lying.]

[Katie wraps both arms around his neck and hugs back, then; it's the only thing she can really do. She clings to him like she's afraid he'll vanish if he doesn't. Mostly, she's hoping that the power of hugs helps at least a little bit.]

I miss him already. [He mumbles it into her hair. He's not sure why - almost positive that he didn't intend to, in fact - but now that it is said there seems little point in denying it.] So much.

[She knows. And there's a sadness settling into her bones as she starts thinking for herself of Capell leaving, and she bites her lip, still clinging to his neck. She'll live with it; people leave all the time. But ...] Do you think he'll come back?

[He runs a hand over her hair, in an attempt at comfort. Dark, dark hair. Just like...

His hug loses some of its frailty.]
I don't know.

[The Empress never did.

...]

Well, you'll just have to keep his room there for him. Just in case.

All right. [She drew Svala a picture, once. It took up her entire wall.] Would you like anything in particular?

Whatever you think he'd like best.

... all right. [She says again. She wonders what Sigmund might think when she's done, given her thoughts. But though she draws back a little, thinking about this, shifting from one foot to another, her hands are still resting on his shoulder.] What about you? Can I do anything?

[Sigmund lets her go and rests a hand on top of her head. He tries to give her a reassuring smile, though it's still a bit wavering and insincere at the corners. The corners always do give him away.] You've done much already.

[But there's more than just sadness in his eyes. There's also something guilty, something slightly covetous, like a child watching someone else get presents. Because she's not his child. She has parents, and he should be wishing her home with all the desperation he wishes Capell back. But Karathos, she could be. The way she looks, the way she acts... But she isn't. Neither is he.]
