008 ["voice"]

[A couple of inkspots appear on the page, as if the owner of the journal is pondering what to write. Then a short pause, and it switches over to voice. Or perhaps "voice." After a minute of nothing but the wind and the faint sound of the river, the entry is cut off by the sound of the journal closing.

... Or is it?

About a half-hour later, there is a muffled thump and the sound of pages flapping through the air before another soft whump. Did someone... punch something over? Faintly, there's a note on a flute. Another, another... an... ear-piercing shrill.]
I don't understand why this is so- [Soft grumbling. If one listens closely, they can pick out the occasional word. Something about some "Veros" character, and several shocking allegations about questionable portions of his anatomy. Yet another pause, and then...

SHREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Shortly followed by a small splash.

...

And then hurried footsteps and a much larger one.]

[That's what he thought.]

What good is regret?

[That one, he needs to consider a little.]

Without it, we're just monsters.

[Sigmund glances to the side and goes back to his flute. At times, Edward really is a simple boy, not that he can be criticized for it.]

The man who pities himself for his own misdeeds is as much a monster as the man who doesn't. In either case, forgiveness cannot change his nature.

...It's not... the same thing. I don't think it is, anyway. You can feel sorry for what you've done without feeling sorry for yourself. [He pauses.] And... a man can always change if he finds himself.

[... Did Edward really just tell him that people can change? Pardon him while he stares blankly. Really?]

[jkhfjsdf d-don't look at him like that!]

M-my lord- I changed, didn't I? [...he did, right? He's better! Honest!]

[He keeps looking at him like that for a bit, before blinking slowly and looking away.]

People may change, but the past does not.

[Edward falls silent again, brooding on that one for a while. What to say, what to say...]

...My lord... I told you that Capell was here with us during our first time in Luceti, didn't I?

[That time he can't remember any of? Is that the time? Just like before his lunaglyph?

Sigmund watches Edward for a moment before his eyes narrow. Not out of anger, out of... something else. He turns away again, his head and torso this time.]

[Sigh. So emo, Sigmund.]

He learned of your past here, and accepted you- was even happy. He called you father. He wanted it. Even if you can't change what happened, isn't it more important to look ahead?

To what?

[He's a little deceased, Edward. That could be a complication on the whole "look to the future" thing.]

...You're assuming you won't see him again.

[Which... is kind of unlikely, all things considered.]

[So much for Edward not questioning him. He's tired, profoundly so. He's tired and he's grieving and he doesn't want to have this conversation.]

Leave.

[...Well. He can't really say that was unexpected, though that doesn't stop it from being hurtful. Much as he doesn't want to - because Sigmund isn't actually resolving anything, as usual - orders are orders, and at the end of the day, he's Sigmund's subordinate before anything else. It's not his place to help any more than what Sigmund will accept; an unfortunate position he's learned to accept since joining the Force.

Though Capell's managed to influence his invasive side, admittedly. Asking questions even in a volitile situation, going above and beyond what's expected... Edward wishes he could be so bold sometimes. ...Or care that much, if it came to that.

He hesitates a moment, watching Sigmund, then lowers his head and rises to his feet, stepping away to head back to the house. He doesn't bow or salute, though. Not this time.]
