008 ["voice"]

[A couple of inkspots appear on the page, as if the owner of the journal is pondering what to write. Then a short pause, and it switches over to voice. Or perhaps "voice." After a minute of nothing but the wind and the faint sound of the river, the entry is cut off by the sound of the journal closing.

... Or is it?

About a half-hour later, there is a muffled thump and the sound of pages flapping through the air before another soft whump. Did someone... punch something over? Faintly, there's a note on a flute. Another, another... an... ear-piercing shrill.]
I don't understand why this is so- [Soft grumbling. If one listens closely, they can pick out the occasional word. Something about some "Veros" character, and several shocking allegations about questionable portions of his anatomy. Yet another pause, and then...

SHREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Shortly followed by a small splash.

...

And then hurried footsteps and a much larger one.]

Passable. A knight should learn many skills.

[Look, Katie. Your favorite subject.]

Does that mean I need to learn the flute?

If you wish.

[Actually... he'd love to teach her. He doesn't know how good he'd be at it, but he'd love to try. The echo ripples a little more, as if it's trying to make its own opinion on the subject known.]

You'd need a flute first.

[Her eyes narrow a little at that reaction, but she can take that in stride. Well. Guitar is more her forte, but the flute has always sounded pretty.]

Do you think I can find one at the shop? Or perhaps Brook has one.

Better than if I made it. [Surely she values her hearing more than asking him to do this twice.]

Would you teach me if I can find one? [Though she already knows the answer to that - this is Katie-the-liar's way of saying Then I'll do exactly that.]

After your sword lessons. [Because of course those still come first.]

[Oh, naturally.]

All right, then. [And she tilts her head.] Were you swimming before?

[Oh. Um.] I dropped the flute in the river. [If by 'dropped,' one means 'hurled violently in a fit of pique.' Yes.]

Oh. No wonder it sounds wrong. [Clearly she knows her way around musical instruments.] Did it get damaged?

No. [Only his conscience and his pride.] You brought me a towel.

Towels are useful for all sorts of things. [She's probably hugging said towel like it's a teddy bear by now. And peering at him hopefully to see if there's any reason for it now whatsoever.]

[Sigmund looks at Katie, then down at the half-finished flute in his hands... he needs to finish this. But he could take a little break. He doesn't want her to worry about him, either.]

... Do you want to go swimming?

Could we?

[He puts the flute down in the grass and slips a leather cover over the knife blade before setting it down as well.]

For a short while.
