chaincutter: (you have ten seconds to appease me)

012 [action/written]

  • Aug. 28th, 2010 at 8:27 AM
[It's fairly early in the morning when Sigmund comes stumbling into town. To say he's in bad shape would be a severe understatement. He's got several nasty gashes, some thankfully starting to scab over, some not, most of them bandaged with what he could rip off his undershirt without getting his armor off. The side of his cuirass is dented in a way that guarantees broken ribs underneath it. He seems dazed, and his eyes are a little glassy, both from blood loss and... something else. Everything looks wrong to him, although less wrong - more subtly wrong? - than hours ago. Yesterday? He's not entirely sure. Probably only yesterday.

His breathing is shallow, and he can't move more than twenty or thirty feet at a time before he needs to crouch down and rest. Despite that, he's making this trip take twice as long as it would otherwise by refusing to go straight through town, and instead moving furtively and sticking to sheltered, out of the way areas when he can. There's something of the injured wild animal about him, and he'll react about the same if approached.

He's having trouble thinking straight, but he knows he needs... something. Things to clean his sword and armor, right. Edward would be upset if they... if they... Edward would be upset. So the smithy will be his first stop. If no one's there, he's leaving them one hell of a mess for later. Sorry 'bout that. The tipped rack and general filth were an accident, promise. With that taken care of, he'll be intent on heading for his house. At least it's a short walk now.

He just needs to rest for a while. Really. Everything is under control.]

[Written, shakily, much later in the day]

The creature that was in the village yesterday has been dealt with. Those who were attacked may rest now.

[Sokka will be waiting around outside and won't be saying much. So in other words, skip him as you will. He'll jump back in if he's needed.]

[He's not going to answer, but she can come in. It isn't as though he's in any shape to stop her. He's curled up on the bed, facing away from the door. He coughs lightly ever so often, and the pillow is starting to be flecked with red by his face.]

[Well, that's clearly healthy.] Sigmund? It's Katara. Sokka told me what happened...

[She enters the room. 'I'm sorry' seems so insufficient, but... she can't see any way out of saying it.] I'm sorry.

[That's actually pretty normal for him. Which is disturbing in its own right, yes. He makes a face when she apologizes, not quite a wince, and pushes himself into a sitting position.]

Don't apologize. I- [He would finish that thought, but he's coughing again.]

[She frowns and moves quickly within a few feet of his bed.] You shouldn't be moving so quickly. You're hurt.

[A hand goes to her waterskin.] I have healing abilities. Will you let me see what I can do to help?

[This again... He stares at her for several moments, and then lays back down. They aren't going to give him any peace, are they?]

If you can.

[She just raises an eyebrow at that and pulls the water out of her waterskin, letting it coat her hands. Then she approaches him and gently lays her hands on his chest. The water covering them begins to glow.

...

...

...what is with his chi paths? They're all... bent in on themselves. And when she extends her bending to tentatively pull on the chi itself, it feels just as bent. Twisted. Like it's heading into itself or spiraling the wrong way or... something. Can this really be it?

She frowns and searches deeper, trying to discern more, find anything pure and - normal - buried beneath those layers of confusion. But it doesn't matter how deep she goes - it's all the same. She can't work with this. Katara removes her hands, taking with her the cool, calming sensation of her bending as she lets the water flow back into the waterskin.]

Well, I can't heal you with my bending. Your chi is like nothing I've ever seen before, and I don't want to risk messing with it. I'll see if Nala can help - your ribs are the worst, right?

[That much, she cold tell.]

[He shudders a bit when she does that bit of exploratory bending. She didn't do anything, he can tell that much. Still, there was something a little... disconcerting about the sensation.]

I don't know. [He knows his ribs are broken, there's a dent in his cuirass to prove it. But he could have any number of serious injuries and be unaware of them. All he did - all he could do - to patch himself up long enough to get back was tie a bandage over places he saw bleeding.] I can't feel...

Pain. For some time now. [This isn't exactly information he's eager to share, because of the wide variety of implications it carries. And he didn't want a healer to start with, but if she's going to be insistent about it (he knows she will), he's not going to waste their time by pretending he even knows where he's injured.]

That's not good.

[And... give her a moment as she processes. She's painfully familiar with death penalties from having to go against Ginko's.] Did... was that something that happened since you've been in Luceti?

Yes. [His expression should make his feelings on continuing that conversation more than clear. He touches his ribs lightly, experimentally, and frowns. He's no healer, but he's fairly sure they aren't supposed to have give to them.]

[Katara is far from intimidated from his expression, but this isn't why she came. It sounds like a death penalty. And there's nothing she can do about that.]

All right. Let's see what Nala can do. [And, calling to the spirit, Katara lightly lays her hands on his ribs. The area about her hands softly begins to flow.]

[The healing works, not perfectly, but certainly an improvement on his previous state. His breathing is still a bit ragged and rattly, but no amount of spells will ever fix that.

What might be most surprising to her is that, despite all of his protests, Sigmund closes his eyes and lets her work. There's a certain gentleness to her presence, that kind of quality that he seeks out in people. He finds it soothing. Perhaps not as much now as he usually would, but soothing all the same.]

[Katara doesn't actually know Sigmund well enough to be surprised that he's cooperating. He's wounded and he's just had to kill someone very close to him. But she is glad that he seems to be finding some sort of relief.

It's curious, though. She's usually better with Nala and this is the second time the spirit hasn't been able to do as much as she'd like. Blocked, somehow. She frowns in concentration.]

Okay. Let me see if I can close some of the larger wounds. Nala is good at that. Then we'll wrap your ribs so they can continue to heal properly and then you can get some rest.

[He doesn't open his eyes, but he does indicate a large gash on his arm... not that it should be hard to find, it has strips of his undertunic tied over it as a makeshift bandage.]

It isn't you.

[She's busy unwrapping the blood-soaked bandage and - since he's not looking, Katara pulls some water out of the air to clean it with. She doesn't want to use her bending water cleanse it since she's not sure how just how clean that water is, and lightly bends the fresh water over the cut. What he says almost doesn't register for a moment.]

Mmm? What do you mean?

[Even if he can't feel any pain for her to be soothing away, there's still something calming about the sensation of having one's wounds tended to after a hard battle. He's finding he doesn't even have the energy to be angry anymore. He's just tired, deeply and profoundly tired. He wants to sleep for days. It sounds like he's already starting to drift off now.]

I don't heal well. It isn't you.

[Her brow furrows as she watches Nala - sluggishly - knit his wound back together. With his chi paths like that... it's a wonder he can heal at all, really. Not even Brook's were like that, and he was a living skeleton!

She wonders if it's just a part of Sigmund's world - those 'blessing' he and Edward had told her about - or if it's part of who Sigmund is himself.

Strangely enough, she doesn't feel that it's her place to ask. At least, not right now.]

Well, you'll just have to get plenty of rest to make up for it. [Her voice is low and soothing - she may have noticed that he already seems halfway there. When this cut seems to have healed all that it was going to, she rewraps it with a clean bandage and moves on to check for other injuries.]

[The rest of them are all fairly obvious - a sword the size of a tree trunk doesn't really do subtle damage. That's a good thing, because she may have to find them herself. Even though he's clearly fighting to stay awake, this has been a trying experience on top of Sigmund's already frail health.

He mutters something indistinct and gestures in the general direction of another gash, though it's probably not all that helpful.]

[Yeah, sweeping the material away from that cut now and washing it out.

She'll continue, quietly, calmly, and as gently and detached as she can be, until every wound is healed as best as she can make it and she is dangerously approaching exhaustion. She'd never encountered so much resistance in healing before.

Katara stands to go, but before she does she moves to bend off all the dried blood from Sigmund's body and clothes - it's not as good as a shower, but as she drops it into the small bowl beside the bed, that's all she's willing to do. She'll take that bowl with her when she leaves, but before she does she reaches out to make sure that he's laying there as comfortably and securely as possible.]
