016 [Voice] (Backdated to... morning?)

Stay in the box. [...] No. Stay in the bo- Stay-

[And that's when Sigmund realizes the journal already started recording while he was distracted.]

Sokka

I need workspace in the smithy. Stay out of my way. I won't be in yours.

Simon

Come to the smithy later. I need to fit you for something.

Katara

We will speak tonight. After dark, past the southern edge of town. If you are willing.

[Sigmund will not be home today until quite late, so the chances of catching him are slim. But everyone will find a neatly handwritten note slipped under their door, to the effect of "I made you something. It is in the kitchen. Your name is on the jars." And, as the notes said, there are three little pyramids of six squatty little jars each on the kitchen table. And in those jars... is pie. Portable pie. Sigmund-cooked portable pie. For Capell and Katie, apple. For Edward, venison and mutton.

...Pie.]

[Sigmund can't start working with the metal until he's got the blank properly sized, so it's not that difficult to keep a watch for Simon. When he shows up, he gathers up a scrap of paper for writing on, a stubby pencil, and a measuring tape and heads out of the workroom to meet him.]

Over here.

[Simon nods, obediently hurrying into the shop behind Sigmund. He's never been to the workshop before - he actually hadn't gone to the weapon shop at all since Kamina's arrival - so he takes a moment to look around, taking in the machines, tools, and fire. Pretty impressive.]

[He is a quiet one, isn't he?

Sigmund shepherds him over to his workspace, out of the way and in a corner. His tools might seem a bit out of place in a metal-shop. A bag of plaster, a wooden box... a piece of wax carved into the shape of a blade...]

Hold your arm out.

[Putting it lightly; it's probably why he manages to keep up with Sigmund's lessons. Simon's still intrigued, but the only way to find out is to do as he's told, so he holds his arm out with a nod.

He can't help but ask, though.]

What's going on?

[He has to kneel to get his measurement. Simon's pretty short, after all.]

You'll need a blade.

[Simon sort of stares at him for that.]

Am... am I ready for a real sword?

[And then his height, too.]

There is more to swordsmanship than fighting. You must care for your weapon, and be comfortable carrying it. We won't sharpen it yet.

[That's probably for the best, so Simon lets himself look relieved for a moment.]

How do you care for it? Doesn't metal just last a long time by itself?

You must check the edge for nicks or dents, and clean it daily so it will not rust or tarnish. You cannot depend on your tools unless you maintain them.

Arm down. Stand up straight.

[Simon shifts position at once, considering this.]

I wonder if Kamina does that... I never see him looking after his sword. [Though Kamina is about as unorthodox as it gets.]

[And now the distance between his palm and the ground... and at an angle... That's going to be rather critical here. Satisfied, Sigmund stands again and starts jotting his measurements down.]

A blade will not last long if untended. You will learn to tend yours.

[With Sigmund done, Simon finally relaxes his posture, shuffling from foot to foot.]

Right- I'll take good care of it. Umm... if you teach me, anyway.

[There's a lot of wax to carve off of this blank yet. :| Simon, why so short? Well, best get to work on that.]

That was what I intended.
